Hi,
I am looking to see if the Sports Institute still offers its Free Injury Evaluation downtown or in Mequon? I know there used to be a link on the BLS website but I didn't see it here. Doc Gordon, can you shed light on this?
I'm particularly concerned about an issue with my knee. Last Tuesday, I went out for an easy run and out of nowhere, my knee felt like it needed to be cracked but wouldn't and random steps had the sensation of “giving out"
If notice now, that if I walk up and down stairs stiff legged with my left leg and holding onto railing, I can manage steps but if I try to walk up and down them without doing so, I have a discomfort outside of my kneecap on the lower right section. That sounds confusing.
If I am standing and flex my knees to squat, I can feel that same discomfort/sense of knee giving out in the same area as well as on the opposite side of the kneecap (meaning on the upper left hand side of my kneecap)
I wonder if I twisted it? Can someone twist their knee without realizing it? If its weak? Or something else is going on.
I have a big marathon coming in two weeks and having run since last Tuesday and am scared to do so in the event that I am going to do more damage.
That's why I wanted to see about getting evaluated.
Any help would be great!
Thanks,
Robin

Robin,

The Sports Medicine Institute sites still do offer the free injury evaluations and I would definitely recommend that you take advantage of one.  It sounds like this is patella chondromalacia (softening of the cartilage on the back of your kneecap), but with a marathon coming up so quick, you are definitely going to want to make sure this isn't something too serious.  Hope this helps and good luck!

Cathy Daily informed me that Aurora Sports Medicine does still have a Free Injury Evaluation Service. These free injury evaluations are available at all Aurora Sports Medicine Institute Clinics.

The link to the URL is http://www.aurorahealthcare.org/services/smi/fie.asp
